Anechoic chamber

ACUTE operates a fully built anechoic chamber — a room whose walls, floor, and ceiling are lined with absorptive wedges to suppress reflections, creating a free-field environment with no audible echo down to a low cut-off frequency.

What it’s used for

• Free-field characterisation of loudspeakers, actuators, and other transducers.
• Binaural and spatial-audio capture without room colouration (e.g. HRTF measurement together with the KEMAR manikin).
• Controlled psychoacoustic and perception experiments where reflections and background noise would otherwise confound results.
• Quiet measurement of low-level signals and directivity patterns.

Access for collaborators

The chamber is available to visiting researchers, industry partners, and artists who need a reflection-free acoustic environment. We can support experiment design, instrumentation, and integration with the lab’s measurement chain.
